A cobertura de temas de ciência e tecnologia realizada pelos diversos meios de comunicação – jornais, TV, rádio, internet etc – envolve diversos mecanismos e processos específicos. Para refletir sobre eles e aprimorar a técnica de jornalistas que tratam dessas questões, foi realizado, nos dias 29 e 30 de abril de 2010, o "Ciência e Mídia - Curso de Capacitação em Jornalismo Científico", no Centro Universitário Luterano de Manaus.

Gratuito, o curso ofereceu 100 vagas e se destinava a jornalistas que cobriam a área de ciência e tecnologia ou que se interessavam por cobrir tais temas – preferivelmente, profissionais que trabalhassem em meios de comunicação de massa, em instituições de ciência e tecnologia e/ou universidades. Também puderam participar alunos de graduação em Comunicação Social/Jornalismo.

A programação incluiu palestras e mesas-redondas com profissionais – jornalistas e cientistas – atuantes na área. Entre eles Marcelo Leite, jornalista da Folha de São Paulo, Daniela Chiaretti, do jornal Valor Econômico, Frank Siqueira, do Diário do Pará, Ildeu de Castro Moreira, do Departamento de Popularização e Difusão da Ciência e Tecnologia/SECIS/MCT, Luisa Massarani, chefe do Museu da Vida/Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz e coordenadora do portal de notícias SciDev.Net/América Latina e Caribe, Ulisses Confalonieri, da Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública/Fiocruz e Cilene Victor da Silva, da Associação Brasileira de Jornalismo Científico.

Também foram convidados a participar os pesquisadores do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa da Amazônia (Inpa) Nilo Higuchi e Éfrem Ferreira, e os jornalistas Ana Célia Ossame, do Jornal A Crítica; Mirna Feitoza, da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (Ufam); Valmir Lima, do Jornal Diário do Amazonas; Denise Cunha, da Área de Comunicação do Instituto Nókia de Tecnologia (INdT); e Daniela Assayag, repórter da Rede Amazônia de Televisão e âncora da Rede Globo em Manaus.

O curso teve carga horária de 16 horas.

"Ciência e Mídia - Curso de Capacitação em Jornalismo Científico" foi organizado em parceria pelo Museu da Vida/Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz, pelo Instituto Leônidas e Maria Deane, Fiocruz na Amazônia, pela Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas (Fapeam), pela Coordenadoria de Comunicação Social/ Fiocruz, pela Rede Ibero-americana de Monitoramento e Capacitação em Jornalismo Científico e pelo Programa Iberoamericano de Ciência e Tecnologia para o Desenvolvimento (Cyted) .

Jornalistas interessados na cobertura de ciência e tecnologia puderam se atualizar e praticar suas habilidades na oficina de reportagem sobre temas de C&T, realizada de 18 a 19 de agosto de 2009 em Quito (Equador). O objetivo das atividades foi oferecer ferramentas para refletir sobre os mecanismos de cobertura da ciência nos meios de comunicação de massa, bem como aplicá-las em exercícios práticos.

O programa contemplou a cobertura jornalística em meios variados – como imprensa escrita, rádio, TV e Internet – e dirigida a públicos distintos. Além das atividades práticas, os participantes discutiram sobre como identificar e avaliar temas interessantes de ciência e tecnologia, como noticiar controvérsias da ciência, como se relacionar de forma sinérgica com cientistas, entre outros aspectos.

A oficina foi organizada pela Rede Ibero-Americana de Monitoramento e Capacitação em Jornalismo Científico, pelo Centro Internacional de Estudos Superiores de Comunicação para América Latina (Ciespal), pelo Museu da Vida e pelo portal de notícias SciDev.Net (Rede de Ciência e Desenvolvimento: www.scidev.net). Criada em 2009 por convocatória do Programa Ibero-americano de Ciência e Tecnologia para o Desenvolvimento (Cyted), a Rede é composta por instituições de 10 países da região. Profissionais de todas as instituições da Rede formaram o corpo docente da oficina.

No dia 27 de março, foi realizada a abertura da Especialização em Divulgação e Popularização da Ciência na Tenda da Ciência Virginia Schall. Aberta ao público, a atividade contou com os físicos Douglas Falcão, pesquisador do Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins (Mast), e Luiz Davidovich, presidente da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, que dialogaram com o público sobre a divulgação científica no Brasil, ressaltando avanços e desafios. 

Falcão, que foi diretor do Departamento de Popularização e Difusão de C&T do Ministério de Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações de 2013 a 2016, levantou as motivações e dificuldades que o campo da popularização da ciência e tecnologia no Brasil está enfrentando. "A consciência desses fatores envolvidos na prática e gestão das ações voltadas para a área é um aspecto relevante para os processos de tomada de decisão envolvidos no cotidiano dos profissionais e das instituições que atuam com divulgação científica", afirma. Durante a apresentação, ele abordou justificativas para o exercício de popularizar a ciência e pontuou que o empoderamento de cidadãos dentro desse processo é fundamental, sendo inclusive um motor para a inclusão social. 

"No Brasil, vivemos uma iniquidade social muito grande. Empoderar a população é necessário para promover a participação cidadã no cotidiano coletivo e para que as pessoas consigam defender seus interesses nos processos decisórios. Quem é empoderado decide sua vida e tem voz na comunidade", disse. 

Pesquisador da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Davidovich recorreu à publicação "O valor da ciência", escrita por Henri Poincaré e publicada no início do século XX. "Ele afirma que 'o homem de ciência não estuda a natureza porque isso é útil; estuda-a porque encontra prazer nisso, e encontra prazer porque a natureza é bela'. A formulação dele oferece um embasamento para a divulgação científica junto à sociedade, considerando que a curiosidade e a paixão pelo conhecimento são características fundamentais do ser humano", explicou. 

Acompanhando esse raciocínio, o físico comentou sobre a importância da pesquisa básica para a ciência e a sociedade, dando como exemplo os estudos e experimentos realizados no super acelerador de partículas Grande Colisor de Hádrons (LHC, na sigla em inglês), um centro de pesquisas europeu que investiga a física de partículas e outras áreas. 

"Vocês podem me perguntar: por que estão estudando isso? Quais são as aplicações práticas? Para além de pensarmos a aplicação mais imediata - e cabe dizer que muitas tecnologias advieram de pesquisas básicas -, vamos pensar também que estudos da física de partículas também nos aproximam dos mistérios do universo e que, por isso, valem o investimento", declarou Davidovich.
