In the history of the Fiocruz Museum of Life, science and art have always gone hand in hand. Ever since its inception, the Museum has sought to explore and promote the interconnection between science and art through popular science activities involving various artistic expressions - particularly theater. Even before its opening, the Science on Stage team was already offering a series of theatrical activities to the public and, since its inauguration, theater has been present as a permanent activity, something unusual in museums.
With premium spaces (the Virgínia Schall Science Tent has 120 seats), this work is carried out by a multidisciplinary team, which includes professionals from the performing arts and various scientific fields, as well as university scholarship holders and lighting/sound technicians. Together, they are constantly seeking to develop methodologies that combine scientific content and theatrical aesthetics.
Between the premiere of the children’s play ‘The Diary of a Hypochondriac Teenager’, in 1996 (three years before the museum's inauguration), and the premiere of the first season of ‘Who Is Everybody?’ (a theatrical production with a cast mostly made up of people with disabilities and neurodivergent people), in 2025, 21 productions were shown at the Science Tent, in addition to other spaces at the Museum and at the Fiocruz campus, not to mention audiovisual productions, such as the web series Invasores (Invaders) and the short film Conferência Sinistra (Sinister Conference). It is a very rich selection, comprised of new and existing plays addressing a wide variety of themes related to science, health and relevant social issues.
